Exam-day readiness
This is general examination-preparation guidance. It is not issued, sponsored, endorsed, or approved by any radio club, Volunteer Examiner team, or Volunteer Examiner Coordinator. The exact confirmation from the examination team you select controls the location, time, fees, identification, registration, equipment, and accommodation requirements.

Choose an examination provider and team, then follow that team’s current registration instructions. W4VPK prepares you for the examination but does not administer the official test through this website.
These answers provide general preparation and identify Laurel VEC where its published procedures are specifically discussed. Your selected team’s current instructions control.
Examination fees depend on the Volunteer Examiner Coordinator and team you select. Laurel VEC currently offers examinations without an examination fee. The FCC separately charges $35 for a new Amateur Radio license application. A routine operator-class upgrade does not carry that application fee unless the application also requests a new vanity call sign. Confirm current fees and instructions with the selected team and the FCC.
Expect to provide your legal name, mailing address, email address, FCC Registration Number, and any existing call sign or license information. The application includes qualification questions that must be answered truthfully. Use an FRN rather than a Social Security number at the exam session.
The Laurel VE team provides the examination materials. You may bring an acceptable calculator, but any programmable memory must be cleared and verified before the examination.
Usually, yes. A scientific calculator is acceptable when its programmable memory has been cleared. The examiners may inspect it before the examination.
No. Laurel VEC does not permit a cell phone to be used as a calculator. Phones must be turned off and must not be used during the session.
Yes. An FRN identifies the person or entity doing business with the FCC and can be used across FCC services.
No. An FRN does not expire. Recover and use the existing regular FRN rather than creating a duplicate.
No. That is a Restricted Use FRN and cannot be used for an Amateur Radio application. Obtain a regular FRN through FCC CORES before the session.
FCC Form 605 includes an applicant-qualification question. Answer every application question completely and truthfully. Volunteer Examiners cannot provide legal advice; contact the FCC or the coordinating VEC if guidance is needed.
Bring acceptable photo identification, your regular FRN, the original and a copy of any license or CSCE documents you want considered for element credit, a cleared calculator if you want to use one, a positive attitude, and some patience. Children without photo ID should arrange acceptable proof with the team in advance. There is no Laurel VEC examination fee.
A CSCE grants credit for the elements shown when it was issued within the previous 365 days. Current licenses provide credit for the elements already earned. Certain expired General, Advanced, Extra, and pre-March 21, 1987 Technician licenses may provide partial credit when acceptable proof is presented. The applicant is responsible for bringing the proof.
Bring acceptable proof of the expired license. A former licensee outside the renewal grace period must still pass the current Technician examination to return to Amateur Radio. Depending on the former class, Element 3 or Elements 3 and 4 may then be credited.
The usual sequence is registration and identity review, team instructions, a monitored examination, grading, paperwork preparation, signatures, and presentation of a CSCE when appropriate. Procedures vary somewhat by team, so listen carefully and be patient while the examiners verify every document.
FCC rules require VEs to accommodate an examinee whose physical disability requires a special procedure. Arrangements can include reading an examination aloud, large print, a quiet setting, or other appropriate assistance. Contact the team well before exam day; the team may request documentation before choosing the procedure.
Yes. Remote video-supervised sessions are available. They require advance registration and usually require a suitable computer, camera, microphone, stable internet connection, and a room that can be inspected and monitored. Follow the selected team’s exact instructions.
Possibly. The Laurel VEs may allow another attempt at their discretion, depending on time, staffing, and the circumstances of the session. Laurel VEC does not charge an examination fee.
An already licensed operator who passes an upgrade may generally use the new privileges immediately by appending the temporary identifier required by FCC rules to the call sign until the upgrade appears in the FCC database. Follow the VE team’s instructions and keep the CSCE available.
Wait until the FCC grants the license and the assigned call sign appears in the FCC database. Passing the examination and receiving a CSCE do not by themselves authorize a new licensee to transmit.
No. The United States eliminated the Morse code examination requirement for all Amateur Radio license classes in 2007.
This usually refers to element credit based on an older license. A Technician license granted before March 21, 1987 may qualify for Element 3 credit, and certain expired higher-class licenses may provide other partial credits. Proof and a VE session are still required.
